SHIRLEY McINTOSH MBE
Shooting
Shirley first took up the sport of shooting at school in Dollar, before joining a squad at the University of Edinburgh.
It wasn’t long until she was on her way to her first Commonwealth Games in Victoria 1994, where she picked up gold and silver. Her achievement meant she was the first Scottish woman to win a prone gold medal for shooting.
At the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Shirley won bronze in the women’s 50m rifle three positions pairs, and another bronze in the 50m rifle prone pairs, making her only the second Scottish woman to win four Commonwealth Games medals.
In 1995, Shirley was awarded an MBE for services to shooting. After retiring in 2008, she continued to be heavily involved thanks to her family connections with the sport – her daughters Jennifer and Seonaid both compete for Scotland under the tutelage of her husband Donald, a leading shooting coach.
