Helen Elliot Hamilton won two Ladies World Championships doubles titles during a glittering table tennis career.

Born in Edinburgh in 1927, she won her first world title in 1949 with Hungarian partner Gizi Farkas and retained the crown a year later with a new partner, England’s Dora Beregi.

Hamilton won 13 consecutive Scottish National Open singles titles, as well as being the International Open singles champion of Ireland, Wales, Germany and Belgium.

After retiring from the sport, she spent many years developing the game in Scotland, and served in many national and international table tennis organisations.

She served two spells as president of the Commonwealth Table Tennis Federation, the second of which lasted from 2009 until her death in 2013.
